There is a good summary of permitted developments and comprehensive detail on planning available to help you. Some quick points of note:

Planning is not required on :-

Single storey outbuildings with max eaves of 2.5 mtrs or 4 mtrs on a dual pitched roof or 3 mtrs in any other case

If the building is within 2 meters of the property boundary the whole building must not exceed 2.5 meters in height.

It must not exceed 50% of the total area of land around the house.

They must not sit forward of the principle elevation of the original house and should not be separate living accommodation.

There are restrictions regarding listed houses and certain areas of land.
